The House of Representatives has officially declared the ongoing erosion crisis and road collapse in Ideato Federal Constituency, Imo State, as a national disaster, urging immediate federal intervention to avert further environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.
This declaration follows a motion raised during plenary, detailing the scale of destruction caused by years of unchecked gully erosion, which has rendered several communities inaccessible and unsafe.
⚠️ The Crisis:
According to reports presented before the House:
Several roads in Ideato North and South LGAs have completely collapsed, isolating villages
Families have been displaced, farmlands destroyed, and local businesses crippled
Schools and healthcare access have been cut off due to dangerous terrain
“This is no longer a state issue — it’s a full-scale disaster. Lives are at risk,” said Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, representative of Ideato Federal Constituency.
🏛️ What the House Demanded:
In a unanimous vote, the lawmakers resolved to:
Urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately intervene
Instruct the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to commence emergency reconstruction
Allocate special ecological funds for erosion control in the affected areas
Conduct an environmental impact assessment to prevent recurrence
🌧️ The Bigger Picture:
Erosion is a growing problem in Nigeria’s Southeast, where heavy rains, poor drainage, and unregulated construction have led to:
Gully expansion into residential zones
Highway degradation and infrastructure collapse
Increased poverty and migration in rural communities
Ideato is now considered one of the worst-hit erosion zones in Nigeria, after Anambra’s Agulu-Nanka axis.
🧠 Residents React:
Locals have welcomed the federal attention, but demand swift action, not just promises.
“Every rainy season we fear for our lives. Our children walk through death traps to get to school,” said Mrs. Amaka Iwu, a resident of Umueshi.
Community leaders are also calling on state officials to collaborate with the federal government for long-term erosion control solutions.
🧭 What’s Next?
A joint inspection team from NEMA, the Ecological Fund Office, and the Federal Ministry of Works is expected to visit Ideato in the coming weeks to assess the damage and begin relief planning.
The federal government has assured that Ideato’s plight will receive priority status in the 2025 ecological intervention budget.
