Stock Market Opens the Week Bullish as Investors Gain ₦341 Billion

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) opened the new trading week on a bullish note, with the equity market capitalisation rising by ₦341 billion on Monday, signaling renewed investor confidence and momentum in the local bourse. This positive start comes amid broader optimism surrounding earnings season, improving macroeconomic indicators, and stable oil prices.

At the close of trading, the All-Share Index (ASI) rose by 0.88% to settle at 103,765.21 basis points, while the market capitalisation increased from ₦58.24 trillion to ₦58.58 trillion. Analysts have attributed the surge to buy interest in blue-chip stocks, particularly in the banking, telecoms, and consumer goods sectors.

Key Drivers Behind the Rally

According to market analysts at Meristem Securities and Cordros Capital, several factors have contributed to the bullish performance:

  • Anticipation of Strong Q2 Earnings: Investors are positioning early ahead of corporate results from major players like Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria, and GTCO, with expectations of solid dividend announcements.

  • Foreign Portfolio Inflows: Following the Central Bank’s recent monetary reforms and increased FX transparency, foreign investors are showing renewed interest in Nigerian equities.

  • Oil Stability and Government Reforms: With Brent Crude hovering around $83 per barrel and President Tinubu’s administration pushing pro-business reforms, sentiment around Nigeria’s growth outlook has improved.

Top Performing Stocks

Among the top gainers on the day were:

  • BUA Cement (+6.20%) – Driven by increased construction activity and infrastructure focus

  • Access Holdings (+4.85%) – Attracting attention after a major expansion announcement

  • Seplat Energy (+5.11%) – Riding on stable oil prices and upstream asset gains

  • Fidelity Bank and UBA also saw notable appreciation due to growing investor appetite in the banking sector

In contrast, a few laggards such as Juli Plc and Royal Exchange saw slight dips, but the overall market breadth remained strongly positive, with more than 32 gainers against 11 losers.

Investor Sentiment and Outlook

Market sentiment remains upbeat as local institutional investors, pension funds, and high-net-worth individuals re-enter the market with increased activity. The bullish open is seen as a potential precursor to a strong week, especially if macro indicators remain stable.

According to Olu Ajayi, Head of Research at Greenwich Securities:

“The ₦341 billion gain shows that investor confidence is gradually being restored. If Q2 earnings exceed expectations and FX liquidity improves, we may witness a sustained bull run this quarter.”

He also noted that continued reforms in the energy and banking sectors, combined with effective fiscal policy, could attract even deeper capital flows into the market.

As Nigeria navigates a new economic era under its current leadership, the NGX’s performance offers an early signal that the tide may be turning for equity investors. While risks like inflation and global interest rate volatility remain, the local market is showing resilience, depth, and potential.

Whether the rally is sustained will depend on corporate earnings, policy consistency, and broader global trends — but for now, investors are smiling as the bulls take early control of the week.
