2023 Election: I Withdrew Court Case After My Late Mother’s Plea — Ajia

Nigerian politician and businessman Ibrahim Ajia has revealed that his decision to withdraw the legal challenge against the outcome of the 2023 general election was influenced by a heartfelt plea from his late mother. Ajia, who contested the House of Representatives seat for Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the emotional disclosure during a memorial lecture held in honor of his mother over the weekend.

According to Ajia, the decision to withdraw the petition — despite what he described as overwhelming evidence of electoral malpractice — was not borne out of weakness or political compromise, but out of deep respect for his mother’s final wish before her passing.

A Mother’s Influence Beyond Politics

Speaking at the event, which was attended by political stakeholders, community leaders, and clerics, Ajia recounted how his mother, Alhaja Memunat Ajia, had called him shortly after the disputed election results were announced in 2023.

“She told me, ‘My son, I know you want justice. But peace is greater than war, and sometimes true leadership is shown by the battles you choose not to fight.’ It was the last major conversation we had before her health deteriorated,” he told the audience.

Ajia described his mother as a woman of strong moral values, committed to peace, community development, and integrity — traits that shaped his political career and outlook on public service.

The Controversial Election Outcome

Ajia had challenged the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, citing alleged voter suppression, irregular collation of results, and manipulation by electoral officers. His legal team had prepared to pursue the case to its conclusion at the tribunal, with early indications suggesting a compelling case.

However, in a surprising move, he withdrew the petition before full trial began — a decision that drew mixed reactions from his supporters and political observers at the time. While some viewed it as an act of maturity and statesmanship, others believed he had succumbed to political pressure.

Now, two years later, his revelation has given new meaning to that decision, framing it as an act of filial love and emotional sacrifice.

Calls for Democratic Reform and Reflection

Ajia used the opportunity to reflect on the state of Nigeria’s democratic process. He emphasized that while elections must be credible and transparent, the emotional and human costs of prolonged political conflict should not be ignored.

“We must continue to demand electoral integrity. But we must also build a culture where leadership is not about court victories, but about serving the people with compassion and selflessness,” he said.

He encouraged other young politicians to see conscience, community peace, and legacy as vital aspects of leadership, rather than just power and positions.

Ibrahim Ajia’s heartfelt revelation underscores a recurring truth in Nigerian politics — that behind the court petitions, party affiliations, and campaign slogans are real people, families, and emotions. His decision to honor his mother’s dying wish over political gain speaks volumes about his values, and offers a human lens to the often combative arena of electoral politics.

In an era where political ambition often overshadows principle, Ajia’s story may serve as a quiet but powerful reminder that sometimes, leadership begins with letting go.
