GTCO will balance global growth with retail dividends – Agbaje

In a bold statement of strategic intent, Segun Agbaje, Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), has reaffirmed the banking giant’s commitment to balancing its ambitious global expansion with consistent value delivery to its retail investors and Nigerian shareholders.

Speaking during GTCO’s 2025 Half-Year Investor Briefing held in Lagos and streamed online, Agbaje emphasized that while the company is aggressively pursuing new markets across Africa and beyond, it will not lose sight of its core base — the retail investors and customers who have remained loyal to the GTBank brand for over two decades.

“As we expand into new territories and diversify our services, our retail shareholders will remain at the heart of our strategy,” Agbaje declared. “We believe growth and gratitude can coexist. Our success abroad must reflect in increased dividends and improved service at home.”

Pan-African and Global Strategy in Focus

GTCO, the parent company of GTBank, has in recent years evolved from a pure commercial bank into a diversified financial holding company offering services across:

  • Banking (GTBank)

  • Asset Management

  • Payment Solutions (HabariPay)

  • Pensions

  • Insurance (GTCO Insurance, GT Assurance)

The company has operational footprints in Ghana, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Rwanda, Tanzania, the UK, and recently entered Francophone markets and East Asia with advisory partnerships. GTCO is also eyeing digital-only banking licenses in Europe, according to internal sources.

Agbaje noted that these strategic moves are designed to mitigate currency risks, increase foreign exchange earnings, and strengthen the group’s position as a pan-African financial powerhouse.

Retail Dividends and Investor Loyalty

Despite its global aspirations, Agbaje emphasized that the company will not compromise on dividend payouts or retail investor confidence, even in the face of volatile macroeconomic conditions in Nigeria.

GTCO has consistently ranked among the top dividend-paying companies on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), delivering stable returns despite inflation, naira devaluation, and interest rate fluctuations.

“Our shareholders have supported us through seasons of growth and contraction. They deserve to be rewarded not just with promises, but with actual earnings,” Agbaje said.
“We are not just a banking group. We are a value-creation enterprise.”

Digital Transformation and Retail Inclusion

Agbaje also spotlighted GTCO’s ongoing digital transformation, driven by its fintech arm HabariPay, and plans to introduce AI-powered personal finance tools and blockchain-based payment innovations for micro and small business users by Q4 2025.

GTCO is investing heavily in:

  • Mobile and USSD Banking Upgrades

  • Agent Banking Networks in Rural Nigeria

  • SME Credit Support Programs

  • Financial Literacy for Youth and Women

These initiatives aim to deepen financial inclusion, broaden GTCO’s digital reach, and build loyalty among the next generation of retail investors and consumers.

Analysts React: A Smart Balancing Act

Financial analysts and investors have praised the group’s dual-track approach.

“GTCO is proving that Nigerian companies can scale globally without disconnecting from local relevance,” said Nneka Ifediora, a financial consultant at AfriCap Securities.
“Agbaje’s approach shows that it’s possible to pursue aggressive growth without forgetting your original stakeholders.”

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) also responded positively, with GTCO stock witnessing a 2.4% uptick in intraday trading following the investor briefing.

Segun Agbaje’s message is clear: GTCO’s global ambition is not at odds with local responsibility. As the company expands its footprint on the international stage, it is also doubling down on domestic impact — for customers, communities, and shareholders.

In a sector often criticized for prioritizing institutional investors and foreign gains, GTCO appears committed to inclusive prosperity, striking a thoughtful balance between scale and service, vision and value.
