Obi to Okpebholo: I’m not afraid of visiting any state in Nigeria

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has fired back at Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Edo State, saying he is not afraid of visiting any part of the country.

Obi’s remarks come after Okpebholo reportedly questioned his recent visit to Edo State, implying that the former Anambra governor’s presence in the state was politically motivated or potentially problematic. In a swift response, Obi emphasized that he is a Nigerian and has every right to travel to any part of the country to engage with citizens, promote unity, or support worthy causes.

“I do not need permission from anyone to visit any state in Nigeria,” Obi said. “As a former governor and a citizen committed to the progress of our nation, I move freely to speak with the people, understand their concerns, and promote peace and development.”

Obi also criticized what he described as the growing intolerance in Nigeria’s political space, urging politicians to embrace a culture of openness and constructive engagement instead of hostility and division.

His visit to Edo State had drawn crowds and excitement among supporters, especially the youth, many of whom see him as a symbol of hope and change. Political observers believe the tension between Obi and Okpebholo highlights the deepening political rivalry in the build-up to the Edo 2024 governorship election.

While Obi has not declared support for any candidate in the state, his presence is already shaping the political narrative, drawing attention to the Labour Party’s rising influence and its potential impact on upcoming elections.
