Football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha recently welcomed his former Super Eagles coach, Clemens Westerhof, to his Lagos residence in a heartwarming reunion that celebrated history, mentorship, and football excellence.
Westerhof, who coached Nigeria between 1989 and 1994, is widely credited for transforming the Super Eagles into a world-class team. He led the country to win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and guided the team to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance that same year.
During the visit, Okocha expressed deep gratitude to his former coach, who gave him his national team debut. The evening was filled with laughter, old memories, and reflections on Nigeria’s golden football era.
Coach Westerhof, accompanied by his wife, described the experience as “an unforgettable night” and praised Okocha’s growth and contributions to football both locally and internationally.
The reunion served as a powerful reminder of the lasting bonds formed through sport and the legacy of teamwork, discipline, and national pride that shaped Nigerian football in the early 90s.
