Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted for medical examinations as investigations into his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt continue to intensify.
Bolsonaro, 69, underwent routine checkups in São Paulo on Friday, according to his lawyers, who said the tests were “preventive” and unrelated to the ongoing political and legal turmoil. The former leader has faced recurring health issues since he was stabbed during his 2018 presidential campaign, which required multiple surgeries.
His hospital visit comes at a tense moment, as prosecutors accuse him of conspiring with military officials to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, which he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the allegations are politically motivated.
Federal police recently raided properties linked to Bolsonaro and arrested several of his close allies, deepening scrutiny of the ex-president. Analysts say the case could determine not only Bolsonaro’s political future but also test the resilience of Brazil’s democratic institutions.
Despite his legal troubles, Bolsonaro remains an influential figure among Brazil’s right-wing voters, many of whom continue to view him as a victim of political persecution.
