TikTok Temporarily Bans Night-Time LIVE Streaming for Nigerian Users Amid Safety Review

TikTok has introduced a temporary restriction on night-time LIVE streaming for users in Nigeria, a move the company says is part of an ongoing safety and content review. The measure, which began rolling out this week, prevents creators from going LIVE during late-night hours, generally reported to be between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. local time.

Many Nigerian users received in-app notifications informing them that the platform is “enhancing user safety” and tightening enforcement of its community guidelines. While the restriction only affects the LIVE feature, users can still upload videos, watch content, and participate in other activities during the affected hours.

According to reports, the decision follows a rise in explicit and policy-violating content circulating on late-night LIVE streams. TikTok has intensified moderation efforts in Nigeria in recent months, previously banning thousands of LIVE rooms and removing millions of videos that breached the platform’s rules.

The temporary ban has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian creators, especially those who rely on late-night streaming — considered peak engagement hours — for visibility and earnings. Despite the pause, TikTok has assured users that all existing creator balances and earnings remain unaffected.

For now, the company has not provided a timeline for when full LIVE access will be restored, stating only that the restriction will remain in place while safety reviews and investigations continue.

As Nigeria remains one of TikTok’s fastest-growing markets, the platform’s move highlights its increasing efforts to curb harmful content and maintain a safer online environment.
