Osun State, December 11, 2025 – In a major political development, Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Accord Party, setting the stage for the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The governor’s defection was marked by a public ceremony, with supporters donning the party’s colors to welcome him into Accord. This move comes after weeks of speculation about Adeleke’s political future, fueled by internal crises within the PDP.
Speaking on his decision, Adeleke emphasized that while he still holds affection for the PDP, the party’s leadership challenges and internal disputes made it impossible for him to continue under its platform. He stated that his priority is to protect his political future and ensure stability in Osun State, allowing his government to continue its developmental programs.
The Accord Party has welcomed Adeleke, and he has been cleared as the party’s sole governorship candidate for the 2026 elections. However, some factions within the party have questioned the legality of his entry, citing procedural concerns.
The PDP described Adeleke’s departure as a reflection of ongoing leadership challenges within the party, while the APC has welcomed the move, viewing it as beneficial to their strategic position in the region.
Political analysts say Adeleke’s switch could reshape the 2026 election landscape in Osun, introducing a new dynamic in the race for the state’s governorship.
As the 2026 elections approach, all eyes will be on how Adeleke consolidates his support within Accord and whether this defection will influence voter behavior in the state.
