đŸ“° Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Revived as FIFA Opens Probe Into DR Congo Player Eligibility

Nigeria’s dreams of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been unexpectedly reignited after world football’s governing body, FIFA, confirmed it is investigating a formal complaint lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding the eligibility of several players fielded by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during their African qualifying playoff encounter.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were knocked out of the tournament after losing 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo in the decisive playoff last month — a result that had appeared to end Nigeria’s campaign.

However, the NFF insists that multiple Congolese players who represented DR Congo may have been ineligible, allegedly failing to fully comply with both FIFA statutes and Congolese nationality laws before playing in the playoff.

FIFA has officially acknowledged the complaint and opened a review into the matter, offering Nigeria a legal lifeline in its bid to remain in the race for a spot at the World Cup finals scheduled in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Pending the outcome of the investigation — which is expected in the coming weeks — Nigeria’s hopes of World Cup participation remain alive.
