A Southeast-based youth political movement, Coalition for United Progress (CUP), has accused former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of undermining the long-standing quest for an Igbo presidency through his recent political choices and silence on key regional matters.
In a press release issued in Awka, Anambra State, the group stated that Obi’s failure to build a strong, inclusive coalition within the Southeast could jeopardize the region’s chances of producing Nigeria’s next president.
đź’¬ Their Statement:
“Peter Obi’s personal ambition and non-collaborative approach are stalling the collective Igbo project. One man cannot carry the hopes of an entire region without strategic alignment,” said Chukwuma Ede, CUP’s national spokesperson.
The group alleged that Obi has alienated political stakeholders in the Southeast and refused to groom or endorse younger political leaders from the region — a move they describe as “counterproductive.”
📉 Frustration Among Youths
The group further criticized Obi for:
Not leveraging his 2023 popularity to build a sustainable Southeast political platform
Avoiding engagement with Igbo traditional rulers and youth leaders post-election
Failing to use his voice in advocating for Southeast-specific development and reforms
“We respect his effort in 2023, but silence and isolation after the loss feel like abandonment,” said CUP Women’s Leader, Ngozi Okereke.
🧩 Political Background:
Peter Obi remains a widely respected figure, especially among youth and urban voters. However, critics say his national focus has come at the expense of regional political groundwork, which is critical if the Southeast is to produce a consensus candidate in 2027.
🤝 What the Youth Group Demands:
The coalition is calling on Peter Obi to:
Publicly commit to the Igbo presidency project
Convene a regional political summit to unify Southeast voices
Mentor a new generation of leaders who can carry the vision forward
They also warned that failure to do so could lead to the fragmentation of the Igbo political bloc, weakening its influence ahead of 2027.
🧠Reactions:
Political analysts remain divided. While some say the criticisms are valid, others believe Obi’s focus on national politics is necessary to avoid ethnic pigeonholing.
“Obi is trying to be a national statesman, not a tribal candidate. That’s both his strength and weakness,” said Prof. Eze Nwachukwu, political analyst at UNN.
