The leadership crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) deepened this week as state chairmen across Nigeria publicly declared their support for the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, and other top officials over alleged financial misconduct and abuse of office.

This move signals a widening rift within the party’s ranks ahead of the 2025 political season.

🧾 The Allegations:

According to documents released by the aggrieved chairmen, the suspended executives are being accused of:

  • Mismanagement of party funds

  • Unauthorized withdrawals and expenditures

  • Failure to render financial accounts to the National Executive Council (NEC)

  • Undermining democratic processes within the party

A statement signed by 20 state chairmen called the suspensions “a necessary step to protect the integrity and future of the SDP.”

🗣️ The Statement:

“We cannot keep quiet while a few individuals hijack the party’s vision and resources. This is not a personal vendetta — it is a rescue mission,” said Hon. Rufus Adewale, SDP Chairman, Osun State.

The chairmen emphasized that the action aligns with the party’s constitution and was approved during an emergency leadership meeting.

đźš« Suspended Officers Include:

  • Shehu Gabam – National Chairman

  • Amina Umar – National Treasurer

  • Joseph Udeh – National Organizing Secretary

The suspensions are pending further investigation by a disciplinary and ethics committee, expected to submit its report in 30 days.

⚖️ Gabam’s Camp Fires Back

In response, loyalists to Shehu Gabam have described the suspension as illegal and politically motivated, insisting due process was not followed.

A counter-statement from the embattled chairman’s media aide said:

“This is nothing more than a factional coup by disgruntled elements who fear the party’s rising influence ahead of 2027.”

The faction is now threatening court action to reverse what they call an “unconstitutional action.”

🔍 What This Means for SDP:

Political observers say this development could:

  • Damage the party’s credibility ahead of elections

  • Lead to legal battles and parallel factions

  • Shake alliances with third-force coalitions seeking an alternative to APC/PDP

Dr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, a political analyst, warned:

“Without unity and transparency, the SDP risks becoming irrelevant before 2027.”

🧠 What’s Next?

The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are expected to intervene, while pressure mounts for a national convention or reconciliation summit to resolve the crisis.
