Govs eulogise Awujale
A chorus of glowing tributes poured in from across Nigeria’s political landscape this week as state governors gathered in Ijebu-Ode to honour the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, for his exceptional reign, unwavering wisdom, and lasting legacy in both traditional and national leadership.
The event, held at the historic Awujale Palace Grounds, brought together governors from both the South and the North, serving and past political leaders, royal fathers, and dignitaries to celebrate the monarch, who has ruled for over six decades, making him one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Africa.
A Monarch Above Politics, Rooted in People
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, has been widely regarded as a voice of reason, justice, and fearless advocacy, not just for the Ijebu people but for the nation at large. Known for his bluntness, moral integrity, and refusal to be swayed by political interests, the Awujale has played critical advisory roles during Nigeria’s most tumultuous transitions — from military regimes to democratic restoration.
“Oba Adetona is more than a traditional ruler,” said Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, the host governor. “He is an institution. His reign has been a compass for our people and a reminder that leadership rooted in truth and service will always stand the test of time.”
National Leaders Speak
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State) described the Awujale as a “custodian of conscience in the Yoruba nation” who has used his throne to promote development, unity, and peace, even during periods of political turbulence.
Governor Nasir Idris (Kebbi State), one of the Northern governors in attendance, praised the monarch’s bridge-building legacy, adding that “Nigeria needs more traditional rulers like the Awujale — strong enough to speak truth to power, yet wise enough to unite diverse voices.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was also in attendance, commended Oba Adetona for rejecting the politics of silence and being “unapologetically vocal in the defense of good governance and accountability.”
A Legacy of Impact
During his reign, Oba Adetona has been credited with:
-
Modernizing the Ijebu traditional institution
-
Establishing the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University
-
Supporting numerous community development and educational initiatives
-
Advocating against corruption and human rights abuses, even during Nigeria’s military era
He has also been a consistent advocate for constitutional reform, calling for stronger roles for traditional institutions in national development, particularly in security and cultural preservation.
Cultural Celebrations and Royal Grandeur
The event also featured a vibrant display of Ijebu culture — from traditional dancers, age-grade parades, masquerades, and the presentation of royal staff of honour to guests. The palace grounds were filled with colorful fabrics, praise-singers, and well-wishers who traveled from far and wide to pay homage to the revered monarch.
Royal guests included the Ooni of Ife, Alaafin-in-Council representatives, the Oba of Lagos, and traditional rulers from the South East and Middle Belt, highlighting the Awujale’s wide-reaching influence.
In an era where leadership is often measured by noise and showmanship, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona remains a symbol of measured strength, quiet dignity, and enduring wisdom. The outpouring of respect from governors across party lines reflects not just admiration for a royal figure — but a collective recognition of values Nigeria so desperately needs: honor, principle, unity, and service.
As the nation navigates its many political and economic crossroads, the Awujale’s voice — steady, principled, and brave — continues to echo far beyond the borders of Ijebuland.
