Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed confidence that he can defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if given the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and two-time Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, said his political experience, deep knowledge of Nigeria’s governance system, and understanding of Tinubu’s weaknesses give him a strong advantage in a potential face-off.
Speaking during a private political strategy meeting with party stakeholders in Abuja, Amaechi reportedly outlined what he described as the “political blind spots” of the current administration. According to sources present at the meeting, Amaechi criticized Tinubu’s governance style, accusing him of being disconnected from the realities on the ground and relying too heavily on political patronage rather than performance-driven leadership.
Amaechi is said to have emphasised that the ADC could present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it is willing to embrace a broad coalition of reform-minded politicians. He noted that Nigeria’s economic challenges, rising insecurity, and growing dissatisfaction with the government have created an opportunity for a strong opposition candidate to win the trust of the electorate.
In outlining his vision, Amaechi promised to focus on uniting the country across ethnic and religious lines, restoring investor confidence, and implementing policies to stimulate industrial growth and job creation. He argued that leadership at the federal level should be anchored on competence and inclusivity, not the consolidation of power within a select circle.
While Amaechi stopped short of officially declaring his candidacy, his remarks were seen by many party members as a clear signal of intent. His statement comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties intensifying efforts to field strong contenders capable of challenging the APC’s dominance.
Political observers note that Amaechi’s confidence in defeating Tinubu may stem from his long-standing political rivalry with some of the president’s allies and his insider knowledge of the APC’s campaign machinery, having played a central role in its past victories. However, analysts caution that winning the ADC ticket would be only the first hurdle, as the party would still need to strengthen its grassroots structures and mobilize nationwide support to challenge the ruling party.
