Nurses call off strike

After days of halted services and tense negotiations, the national body representing nurses across the country has officially suspended its industrial strike action. The decision was reached following a series of meetings between the leadership of the nurses union and high-ranking government officials, aimed at resolving longstanding grievances within the healthcare sector.

The strike, which had led to the shutdown of various public hospitals and health centres, was driven by demands for improved salary structures, hazard allowances, adequate staffing, and better overall working conditions for nurses and midwives.

According to union representatives, the government has now committed to addressing key issues raised, including the implementation of a revised salary scale and prompt payment of arrears. The agreement also outlines steps toward improving the safety and welfare of healthcare professionals nationwide.

“We went on strike not because we wanted to, but because we were left with no option. Our members have been working under difficult conditions for too long. We are glad that the government has finally listened to us and we are hopeful that this agreement will lead to lasting change,” a union spokesperson said.

With the strike now officially suspended, normal operations are expected to resume in hospitals, clinics, and other public health facilities starting immediately. The union has urged its members to return to their duty posts while monitoring the implementation of the agreed terms.

This development comes as a relief to thousands of patients across the country who were affected by the disruption in medical services. Many had faced delays in receiving critical care, including maternal and emergency health services.

The government has expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of the nurses, promising to uphold its end of the agreement and work closely with healthcare professionals to ensure a more efficient and humane health system.
